These photos and captions were taken from a 10-state SE USA Fall Road Trip Vacation we took in October of 2007. Based on a prior road trip, we decided we would start our Fall Vacation driving tour on the colorful Fall Blue Ridge Parkway at the southern end at the Smoky Mountain National Park and drive north to near Fancy Gap, Virginia, before heading back west toward home in Central USA.
We stopped at many attractions on and near the Parkway on our drive up from near Cherokee, NC up to Ashville, North Carolina where we spent a day touring the Biltmore Mansion and Estate -- and then on north on the Blue Ridge Parkway to near Fancy Gap, Virginia where we got off to head back west. We spent about 2 1/2 days actually driving on the parkway and doing many pulloffs for Fall Foliage pictures and Visitor Centers, plus a full day touring the Biltmore Estate. We averaged about 25 MPH on the Parkway with all of the Scenic pulloffs and Visitor Center stops + the 45 and 35 MPH speed limits.
A full length trip from the South end to the North end of the Parkway would take a minimum of 3 days driving time on the Parkway, and preferrably 4 or more if you took time to enjoy all of the Scenic Overlooks and Visitors Centers + nearby Attractions.
The drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway is through some some very scenic forested mountain areas - you can see from the pictures below that you could see some beautiful Fall Foliage colors if you are considering a Fall Blue Ridge Parkway Vacation and you catch the peak foliage color period. We had some rain and fog while we were on the Parkway, but the area needed the rain and the periods of sun gave us even more contrasting Fall Foliage colors with the leaves, vegetation, and rocks being wet. Plus we saw some waterfalls that only exist during periods of rain. We have a reason to go back to get some "non-foggy" pictures at the higher elevations where it was foggy this trip.
A few Pictures from our colorful mid October 2007 Blue Ridge Parkway Vacation drive are below so you can see why this is a "Must See" minimum 3 1/2 day Getaway trip alternative or "add on" to a Virginia Beach Vacation.

Fall Blue Ridge Parkway Vacation
- Photos & Comments

We got on the Blue Ridge Parkway at the southern end of our drive near the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which is just east of Gatlinburg, TN and
close to Cherokee, North Carolina.

We had some rain and fog at higher elevations on our Blue Ridge Parkway Vacation / Fall Road Tour. The rain washed the colorful Fall foliage so that the colors were bright when we we did have patches of sun and could take pictures at the higher altitudes.
The higher elevations had especially colorful foliage during our mid October Fall Vacation. The area was in need of rain, so everyone appreciated the showers. (Even though we wished they had finished the day before we were there!)

A colorful scenic pulloff on the Blue Ridge Parkway - falling leaves everywhere for this October Fall Road Trip. The 469 mile long Parkway was constructed in the 1930's as a make work project during the depression.
Maximum speed on the limited access parkway is 45 so you have plenty of time to enjoy the scenic Fall views. Can pull off almost everywhere for pictures on the Parkway in North Carolina or Virginia.
