What to See and do in the Newport Oregon Coastal area on a Day Trip from Florence, Oregon

Day Trip Summary: North up scenic Coastal Hwy 101 to Newport area - Yaquina Bay and Yaquina Head Lighthouses. Maybe see Oregon Coast Aquarium. Lunch at Georgie's Beachside Grill restaurant in Newport - great view of Newport Oregon Beaches. Check out Cape Perpetua Scenic area and spectacular Views of Coast and Pacific Ocean south of Yachats on way back - maybe spot a whale. Do guided nature walk if have time. The scenic day trip drive approximately 50 miles up the 101 Coastal Highway to Newport Oregon beaches and attractions is a "Must See" for any Vacation to the central Oregon coast.
Take plenty of film or digital memory cards and enjoy the many Oregon coast picture pulloffs along the mountainous and oceanfront drive up to Newport. Save the Cape Perpetua Scenic area and various nature walks for the trip back so you will be sure and have time for both of the Lighthouse Tours and historic displays - and possibly the Aquarium which you may want to do first because of the late opening times of the lighthouses.

May want to visit Oregon Coast Aquarium just off Hwy 101 near south end of Yaquina Bay Bridge. This opens earliest, so will probably want to plan to see it before either of the lighthouses. Six acre 40,000 square foot aquarium with 15,000 marine animals that can be viewed. Underwater acrylic tunnel walk under sharks. Movie about sharks, grey whales, and sea birds. Touch pool for kids. Open daily 9-6, 10-5 off season. Admission $10.75, over 64 $9.50, 4-13 $6.50. Rated "Gem" by AAA. Allow 2 hours.

Yaquina Bay Lighthouse is at north end of Yaquina Bay Bridge in Yaquina State Park.
Built in 1871 - only used until 1874 when replaced by taller & more visable Yaquina Head Lighthouse below. Has attached light keepers living quarters - now a museum. Daily 11-5, off season noon - 4. Closed Holidays. Donations. Allow 30-45 minutes.

Can see some interesting transitions between wide sandy beaches and rustic rocky beaches in this scenic central Oregon coast drive up to Newport on the Coastal 101 Highway.

Built in 1873. Tallest Lighthouse on Oregon Coast. Now automated light still used.
Wildlife viewing for all types of marine life, may get lucky and spot a grey whale migrating by. Tidal pools, hiking trails, rocky beach, and Interpretive Center. Great views of Newport Oregon beaches. Guided tours available for lighthouse. Intrepretive Center hours daily 9 -4, Off season noon - 4. Lighthouse daily noon - 4.

Have late lunch at Georgie's Beachside Grill adjacent to the Hallmark Resort.
Reasonably priced food and can watch the waves on an attractive strip of Pacific Ocean sandy Beach. (This picture was taken through the window at Georgie's in the dining area.) Great view of Newport Oregon Beaches.
Oregon Coast from Cape Perpetua Scenic Overlook - south of Yachats- 803 feet above sea level - spectacular view! Don't miss this!
Scenic Overlook is highest point on Oregon Coast accessable by vehicle. (entrance is about a mile N of Interpretive Center entrance. Could check this out on way up if skipping Aquarum but afternoon sun will be better for your Coastal Oregon Beaches pictures.)
Cape Perpetua Scenic Area & Interpretive Center has marine gardens, Cook's Chasm "spouting horn" where sea spouts up through a hole in a rock. Hikes through a temperate rainforest. Campground. Interpretive Center 9-5, times vary during off season. Fee $5 per vehicle. A "Must See" for your Newport Oregon Beaches Day Trip.
